The NZ Jacket has been a part of Yarmouth Oilskins’ history for over a century. Its story starts with a bit of innovation, a trip halfway around the world, and a drive to make hard-wearing clothing better for those who rely on it.
Back in the late 1800s, oilskin waterproofs were a necessity for fishermen and sailors, but they were also far from ideal. The jackets were made by coating linen with linseed oil, which made the fabric sticky and heavy. Over time, it would stiffen and take on a yellowish tint—not the most comfortable or durable solution.
That’s when John William Johnson, the director of Yarmouth Oilskins (or Johnson & Sons as it was then known), made a trip to New Zealand. While there, he noticed that local manufacturers were experimenting with a new way to make waterproofs. Instead of the linseed oil method, they were using paraffin wax, which was lighter, less sticky, and much easier to wear. Inspired by what he saw, Johnson returned to Great Yarmouth and launched the 'NZ' line of waterproofs, including the now iconic NZ Jacket.
In 1903, Johnson brought in a coating machine to help with the process, but much of the work remained manual for years. This hands-on approach to craftsmanship has always been a part of our ethos, and it’s something that still rings true today.
Interestingly, John Barbour of South Shields discovered the same paraffin wax process around the same time. Unlike Johnson, Barbour was able to patent the idea and went on to make a name for himself with his world-renowned waxed jackets. But while Barbour became a household name, the NZ Jacket has quietly remained a favourite for those who appreciate our brand’s heritage, quality, and understated history.
Nowadays, our NZ Jackets are made from waxed cloth sourced from Halley Stevensons, one of Britain’s oldest wax mills. Over time, they develop a unique patina that tells your personal story—a jacket that only gets better with age.
To honour the jacket’s legacy, we’ve even recreated the original label, which you’ll find inside each modern NZ Jacket—a nod to its history and the generations of craftsmanship that came before.
Today, the NZ Jacket is available on a made-to-order basis, still made by our team in Great Yarmouth. If you’re looking for a jacket that will see you through many winters to come, it’s the perfect choice. We ask that you allow 4-5 weeks for delivery, but we’ll keep you updated throughout the process.
